A specialized defense modifier grants the character a bonus equal to their modifier when defending against attacks that are from a particular type. These types can be, but are not limited to; Energy, Magic, Mental, Elemental, Organic, Inorganic, Airborne or Toxins.
Although this specialized defense is meant to reflect a character ability to more greatly avoid harm from one type of source it can be easily manipulated to the players advantage. We encourage GMs to apply cost modifiers to any specialized defense that they feel is to broad to count as a “single” source. If the player is looking for a better than normal defense, they should check out toughness below, which grants free defense as well as added effects like negating damage multipliers and armor penetration.
